Personality:

With the impatience of a child, and the ruthlessness of a murderer, Kilgrave is a truly terrifying individual. As a boy, he was experimented upon, in painful and horrific ways, in order to try and cure a neurological condition that would ultimately kill him. As a result, he developed a power that enabled him to control other people’s minds, and the years of anger and frustration gave him cause to lash out for all the treatment he’d endured. He’d been controlled for so long, that he wanted to make other people feel the same way. He turned upon his parents, who were his first victims, made them follow his every childish command, even causing harm to his mother, because to him, this was what he deserved. He blamed them for the pain he’d been through. No more than ten years old, he didn’t understand his condition, and since that life changing moment, there are parts of that young Kevin Thompson that linger with him to this day, in dark moods, childish temper tantrums, and an unrealistic desire to have what he wants, whenever he wants it.

That comes in many forms, be it people or possessions. He wants the best - the most beautiful women and the grandest apartments, simply because he can. Kilgrave is essentially an overgrown spoilt child who has never been told the word ‘no’, giving him a dangerously twisted view on the world around him. He genuinely doesn’t see that what he does is immoral - his upbringing, or lack of, has tainted his way of thinking, giving him no boundaries that would limit a normal person. He only knows that he can have everything he desires - he only has to ask.

The tragedy of Kilgrave, is that he’s blinded by all that he is - sadistic, obsessive, dangerous - to realise that he is also frightened, damaged and alone. He was a boy who lost his childhood to horrific experiments, given far more power than he could ever possibly understand. He was given everything he could ever possibly desire, an upbringing without rules, enabling him to control everybody he loved with fear until he was ultimately abandoned by his parents. Gone were the fundamental aspects of parentage that would turn a brattish child into a well-rounded adult - leaving an emotionally scarred psychopath in its place.

With this freakish desire to have absolute control, comes a volatile temper. He is quick to anger, and if anyone annoys him, however small, he’s not beyond causing pain or even death. He treats other lives around him so flippantly, uncaring and self righteous, believing that other people will ruin their own lives anyway so he’s only speeding up the process. He’s guiltless and blameless, always someone else’s fault for what he is or what he does. He doesn’t understand taking responsibility for the pain he causes, making him reckless and downright psychotic. He treats people like objects, throwaway and without consequence - using them to serve his purpose before discarding them in whatever manner his mood takes that day. He is so lost to reality, that he believes his sadistic, off-hand behaviour is normal. He terrifies, harms and rapes others - either uncaring to their own wants, or delusional enough to believe they want it too.

There have been occasions when Kilgrave has tried to do things ‘properly’ - like buying Jessica’s house believing it’s a romantic gesture, or trying to profess his love to her. He understands so little of the real world, that he barely knows how to behave like a normal human being, and even when he tries to avoid using control, he is inevitably manipulative, and able to convince himself he’s doing things ‘normally’. He doesn’t understand that even without his powers, he still goes about things all wrong, to the point of being desperately frustrated when he can’t work out why Jessica spurns his advances. He thinks he’s giving her everything she wants, when in truth, as usual, it’s everything he wants. He refuses to accept that he has been possessive of Jessica, and denies that he’s ever raped her. He believes he is a victim of love, that’s she’s ensnared him in turn, having been infatuated by her ever since he saw the power she wielded. As with all of his materialistic possessions, he wants the very best, and he wanted her; but when she broke control and walked away, something incredible happened, Kilgrave was refused.

For the first time, in a very long while, someone managed to avoid bending to his will, and that fascinated Kilgrave. Immediately, his attraction to Jessica twisted into something far more - warped and obsessive, wanting to know her every move, see pictures of her, hear her voice. He wanted the woman who didn’t want him - for that very reason. He wanted the ultimate victory of being able to win her back, to have the one person that told him ‘no’. He’d never had that resistance in so long, and it only made him want her more, a trophy of his power.

He genuinely believes that Jessica loves him that, that she’s just too stubborn to see. He thinks he can convince her, without his powers, that they destined to be together. He once let up his control on her for more than 12 hours, and convinced himself that because she didn’t leave, she wanted to stay with him willfully - however his mind is so skewed that he’s masked the truth of these events like so much of his life. Jessica was ready to kill herself to free herself from him, and he had to command her to come back to him.

Kilgrave is so blinded, that he even paints himself as a victim, unable to see himself for what he really is. While it’s true, that he’s had to live a difficult life of considering every specific words he says in danger of accidentally commanding someone, he doesn’t recognise he cannot blame his powers for the man he became. For a very brief moment, during his time of trying to win back Jessica, he even considers if he could be a hero, to use his powers for good, but while he finds this change refreshing, he enjoys it for all the wrong reasons, too psychologically damaged to ever realise the difference between good and evil. In the end, Kilgrave will only ever know a life of controlling others, which is exactly what’s controlling him.

Without his powers in Teleios, Kilgrave will experience a mixed range of emotions. He will feel angry, weak, suddenly fearful that he has no more protection. Vulnerable and at risk of being exposed, he will look for other ways to manipulate people, words without power. While he might not have his mind control, he will still be a dangerous man to cross, who will do anything he can to get the things he wants. And that’s Jessica. But the truth so easily twists in his mind, to convenience him, that he’ll actually believe he has more of a chance with her than ever. Because now he can’t control her, perhaps she’ll finally realise how much he needs her.. and how much she needs him.

Powers/Abilities:
Mind Control - The ability to control people’s actions with verbal commands that must be given in person. Once his instruction is given, the victim will feel compelled to complete the action even after he leaves, and won’t be able to stop unless he says so. After ten to twelve hours of the command, they will regain their will. There are loopholes, however. If Kilgrave’s order is not clear enough, they can be open to interpretation. For example, when telling a victim to put a bullet in her head, the command was satisfied by her putting the bullet in her mouth - thus breaking his thrall.

Kilgrave looks out at the view as he watches another sunset descend upon New York City. He takes in a deep breath like he's smelling fresh countryside air and made a theatrical cough at his unwise decision. "If I didn't love New Yorkers.." he says aside to the man stood next to him, sniffing slightly as he casually adjusts his scarf around his neck.

He turns away from the view, from the edge of the building that's easily a fifty storey drop or more. Over it, a man is dangling his girlfriend by the neck, her dress blowing in the wind as she struggles and screams and begs him to not do this.

Reaching the door, Kilgrave looks back, as if annoyed by the delay, when he snaps his fingers, realising his error.

"Oh, right. Yes, just drop her, will you? And come with me."

The woman's screams echo as she plummets, and the man silently, robotically turns to follow Kilgrave. Best to make a sharp exit now, the police will no doubt be sniffing around soon, and he doesn't intend to be around here when they do. He returns into the offices, pressing the button for the lift before he patiently makes his way to the ground floor and out onto the street, glancing back briefly to see a horrified crowd has gathered around the body of his latest victim.

It doesn't effect him, seeing the carnage he's caused, an innocent life lost at his command. He watches unfeelingly, dismissing the scene like it's a fuss over nothing, and continuing on through the night. Still, that kind of thing does tend to dampen one's mood a little, and he figures the only good pick-me-up is a pretty young blonde, a fantastic meal and then taking her back to his bed. There's one approaching him on the street now, hand in hand with her husband, chatting happily and blissfully unaware of the horrors to come.

Good.

He'll have her.
